Game of tag: 2009 Franchise players

There were quite a few teams who slapped the franchise tag on players prior to Thursday’s deadline. Some of those players would have looked nice in a Bears uniform but probably would not have found their way to Chicago courtesy of Jerry Angelo.

Here’s a roundup of those transactions with accompanying stories.

Karlos Dansby, LB – Arizona Cardinals
For a second straight season, the Cardinals have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby – a move designed to buy time for the team to negotiate a new long-term contract. Read more…

Michael Koenen, P – Atlanta Falcons
Falcons punter Michael Koenen signed an one-year contract that pays him $2.48 million on Friday, according to his agent Michael McCartney. The team officially placed their non-exclusive franchise tag on Koenen on Thursday. Read more…

Terrell Suggs, LB – Baltimore Ravens
Less than 24 hours before the Thursday deadline to apply the franchise tag to a player, the Ravens have officially given the designation to linebacker Terrell Suggs. Read more…

Julius Peppers, DE – Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers designated defensive end Julius Peppers as their franchise player for the 2009 season, the team announced Thursday. Read more…

Shayne Graham, K – Cincinnati Bengals
While the one-year, $2.48 million franchise tag may have irked Graham some in his efforts to get a long-term deal, he acknowledged the community in a statement released through his representative. “I appreciate the Bengals’ recognition of my value to the team,” Graham’s statement read in part. “I would have preferred to enter a long-term market value contract, either with the Bengals or through free agency. Dunta Robinson, CB – Houston Texans
The Texans placed the franchise player designation on unrestricted free agent cornerback Dunta Robinson, the team announced Thursday. Robinson is the first player in team history on whom the Texans have used the franchise tag. Read more…

Matt Cassel, QB – New England Patriots
The New England Patriots placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Matt Cassel on Thursday, making it tougher for other teams to sign the free-agent quarterback. Read more…

Brandon Jacobs, RB – New York Giants
The Giants today designated Brandon Jacobs as their franchise player, virtually ensuring that the free agent running back will be with the team in 2009. Read more…

Leroy Hill, LB – Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks insured themselves against a potential void at linebacker by placing their franchise tag on Leroy Hill to keep him from leaving in free agency. Read more…

Oshiomogho Atogwe, FS – St. Louis Rams
It’s official. The Rams have placed the franchise tag on free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. All signs pointed to Atogwe receiving the tag last night but team sources confirmed the tag placement on Thursday afternoon. Read more…

Antonio Bryant, WR – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave Antonio Bryant an opportunity to resuscitate his NFL career in 2008. After he did exactly that – to the tune of 83 catches and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award – the Buccaneers were eager to have Bryant continue that once-again promising career in Tampa. To that end, the Buccaneers made a move on Wednesday evening to ensure that Bryant would remain with the team at least through the 2009 season, placing its franchise tag on the 27-year-old receiver.
