BearsBeat.com 2009 Draft Board: Offensive Tackles

April 10th, 2009 - 12:00 am

Here’s a look at how I feel about the 2009 offensive tackle prospects. The order may change as draft day nears.

1. Eugene Monroe – Virginia
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.23
What I like about him: Good size with long arms that can recover well if beat. Good quickness.
What I don’t like about him: More of a finesse blocker than a power one. Durability a question.

2. Jason Smith – Baylor
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.22
What I like about him: Great athlete who plays with aggression. He’s a smart player with a good work ethic.
What I don’t like about him: His technique will need some refinement. Needs more consistency at the next level.

3. Andre Smith – Alabama
Height: 6-4 | Weight: 340 | 40-time: 5.30
What I like about him: Good speed despite his size. Has good awareness and is built like a truck.
What I don’t like about him: Has questionable character and dedication after showing up at the scouting combine but refusing to work out because he said he wasn’t ready.

4. Michael Oher – Mississippi
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.20
What I like about him: Shows good balance and has great lower body strength. He’s got good durability not missing a start in thirty-four games.
What I don’t like about him: Doesn’t possess great lateral quickness and will need to improve his technique. His football intelligence has been questioned.

5. Eben Britton – Arizona
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.16
What I like about him: Has a solid frame and good strength. He plays tough and competitive and has good instincts.
What I don’t like about him: Not the best athlete. Isn’t very quick and can’t get to the second level in time.

6. Phil Loadholt – Oklahoma
Height: 6-8 | Weight: 332 | 40-time: 5.45
What I like about him: Massive size and strength. Will stand up almost any pass rusher. He does well driving the defender off the line.
What I don’t like about him: His endurance is questionable as he wears down late in the game. He can be a bit slow off the snap.

7. William Beatty – Connecticut
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 307 | 40-time: 5.12
What I like about him: He’s got sound technique and will finish every play. His strength allows him to bully speedy pass rushers if he can get his hands on them.
What I don’t like about him: Doesn’t have great agility and won’t help a quarterback who likes to move around in and out of the pocket.

8. Jamon Meredith – South Carolina
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 304 | 40-time: 5.03
What I like about him: He has good versatility and decent size. He’s a hard worker and a leader on and off the field.
What I don’t like about him: He’ll likely need to put on some weight and strength. His lower-body strength is called into question because he doesn’t blow anybody off the ball.

9. Troy Kropog – Tulane
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.22
What I like about him: Has great strength and lateral agility. He can get to the second level and sustain his blocks. He has good blitz recognition and pick up.
What I don’t like about him: He needs to add bulk. He might get blown backward by bull rushers. Needs to improve his run blocking.

10. Gerald Cadogan – Penn State
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 309 | 40-time: 5.25
What I like about him: Will get to the second level and bully linebackers. He takes good angles and uses his hands well.
What I don’t like about him: Doesn’t swivel his hips well. He needs to sink his hips better so as not to get blown backward. His passion for the game has been questioned by some.

11. Jason Watkins – Florida
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 318 | 40-time: 5.40
What I like about him: He’s a good blocker in space and has played on both sides of the line. He’s got good body mass and can get to the second level.
What I don’t like about him: He’s sometimes too soft and lacks awareness. Doesn’t have ideal power and lacks high energy.

12. T.J. Lang – Eastern Michigan
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 305 | 40-time: 5.21
What I like about him: He’s put together well and plays tough. Has decent power and puts forth solid effort.
What I don’t like about him: Sometimes looks mechanical in his movement and doesn’t play with fluidity. Needs to move his feet and drive his legs better.

13. Ramon Foster – Tennessee
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 338 | 40-time: 5.35
What I like about him: Great strength and size and uses his long arms to his advantage. He’s a solid run blocker and shows good work ethic and leadership.
What I don’t like about him: Doesn’t have great recovery skills and his heavy legs can cause him to get beat or hold.

14. Xavier Fulton – Illinois
Height: 6-4 | Weight: 301 | 40-time: 5.10
What I like about him: Good athlete who is light on his feet. He’s intelligent and tenacious and will play until the whistle blows.
What I don’t like about him: His technique is inconsistent, he lacks ideal strength, and he takes bad angles. Durability may be a concern.

15. Garrett Reynolds – North Carolina
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 310 | 40-time: 5.30
What I like about him: Tough player with a good base that can finish blocks on the second level. Has NFL bloodlines.
What I don’t like about him: Needs to work on his footwork and lacks the quickness needed to handle speed rushers. Doesn’t drive defenders off the ball.

16. Fenuki Tupou – Oregon
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 314 | 40-time: 5.30
What I like about him: Has a solid frame and uses his strength to engulf a defender and push him off the line.
What I don’t like about him: Might struggle to adjust to the speed of the NFL game. Doesn’t seem to have a mean streak and will have to refine his technique.

17. Sebastian Vollmer – Houston
Height: 6-8 | Weight: 290 | 40-time: N/A
What I like about him: He’s got great height which will help him in using his arms to fend off a defender. He’s got great desire and will finish every play.
What I don’t like about him: He’s a bit thin-framed and needs to add bulk. Doesn’t have great speed or agility.

18. Augustus Parrish – Kent State
Height: 6-4 | Weight: 302 | 40-time: 5.23
What I like about him: He’s got good balance and strength and can protect a defender from penetrating the pocket.
What I don’t like about him: Doesn’t have ideal size or athletic ability. His speed will prevent him from getting to the second level.

19. Alex Boone – Ohio State
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 328 | 40-time: 5.25
What I like about him: Excellent size and upper-body strength. He finishes his blocks and can make adjustments on the fly.
What I don’t like about him: Not enough lower-body strength to drive his legs blow defenders backward. His reaction time is slow and can get beat inside.

20. Eric Vanden Heuvel – Wisconsin
Height: 6-8 | Weight: 325 | 40-time: 5.30
What I like about him: A smart player from a big program that has size and body control.
What I don’t like about him: Footwork needs improvement has limited range. Doesn’t have a mean streak.
