According to NFL Media’s Albert Breer and the San Jose Mercury News’ Tim Kawakami, new Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase was very close to becoming the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach, if not for his refusal to hire Jim Tomsula as his defensive coordinator.
Gase did not want to be told who his coordinators would be, so the Niners hired Tomsula instead to be their head coach, a decision widely met with skepticism.
I can’t say I blame Gase. You only get one chance to make a first impression as an NFL head coach and there are only 32 of those positions in the world. No one wants to work with someone thrust upon them for those aren’t ideal working conditions. A strained relationship with his coordinators could have tainted his head coaching track record.
Here’s hoping Gase made the right choice and will make the Bears successful on offense.
