The Bears have reached an agreement with free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
Royal, who will turn 29 before the season starts, will be reunited with quarterback Jay Cutler, from whom he caught passes as a rookie with the Denver Broncos in 2008. That season, Royal caught 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns.
Ironically, the move comes after the Bears traded away Brandon Marshall, who was Cutler’s other top option in 2008 with Denver.
Since that season, Royal has had somewhat a roller coaster career. After a sophomore slump, he caught 59 passes for 627 yards and three touchdowns in 2010, but caught only 19 passes in a shortened 2011 season.
The San Diego Chargers signed Royal to a three-year contract in 2012, but he only had five starts in the first two years with the team. Last year, in a more regular role, Royal caught 62 passes for 778 yards and seven touchdowns.
