Bears linebacker Pernell McPhee made an impact for the second straight week when he picked off Raiders quarterback Derek Carr off a deflection in Sunday’s 22-20 win over the Oakland Raiders.
McPhee, the Bears’ top free agent signing this offseason, had two sacks in a strong performance against the Seahawks last week. He appeared to have carried that momentum into this week in not only recording the takeaway, but leading the team in tackles and spending a lot of time in the Raiders’ backfield.
The key for the Bears’ defensive success in applying pressure off the edges and getting to the quarterback. McPhee has spent a lot of time around the quarterback this season, but has only registered two sacks so far.
Still, that kind of issue can be resolved with more concentration and fundamentals. But getting to the quarterback has been an issue for the Bears for a few years now and McPhee has that ability already ingrained in his DNA.
