Martellus Bennett trade or release likely to happen

According to multiple sources, the Chicago Bears are actively seeking a trade partner for tight end Martellus Bennett.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the team and Bennett’s agent are trying to “find a trade partner that would be an agreeable landing spot” for Bennett.

The market for Bennett might not be as rich as Bears fans might hope for a versatile tight end in his prime, one year removed from the Pro Bowl.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, if the Bears cannot find a trade partner, the team might outright release Bennett and get nothing in return.

It’s sad that the relationship between the Bears and Bennett has evaporated to the point beyond repair. Bennett has been a model citizen off the field, but it’s his work ethic and focus that has been called into question.

Biggs went on to tweet:

If the Bears do part ways with Bennett, either via trade or release, that will create yet another hole on the roster the team needs to fill. Zach Miller is a free agent and the team could elect to re-sign him, but they have to be careful to depend on an injury-prone veteran on the wrong side of 30.
